Converse Japan Upgrade the Chuck Taylor with Patchwork Corduroy and React FoamRelease: 14 October 2020
Because Converse Japan operate almost independently to their western counterparts – thanks to an advantageous licensing deal from decades ago – they get to do some crazy stuff with icons like the Chuck Taylor All Star. For example, this new release not only rebuilds the uppers in corduroy, it also immensely improves comfort levels with Nike React insoles. Only in Japan!
The eight-panel upper configuration enables these Chucks to be arranged asymmetrically, further emphasised by the Neapolitan icecream tones of brown, beige and pink. In corduroy, no less. Other thoughtful features include stain-resistant hardware, anti-bacterial lining treatment, and grippier tread. This sort of premium preppy aesthetic is perfect for the stylish streets of downtown Japan, where these high-tops and numerous other Japan-exclusives are undoubtedly lining the shelves of popular retailers. And those already rocking them will be rewarded for their new-pair fervour with the cloud-like Nike React insoles that are included, in place of the standard option. Converse Japan also advise these will fit a little smaller compared to regular Chucks due to the plusher insoles. Good to know.
They’re already sold out from Converse Japan’s website – if you’re from abroad you’d have needed a plug anyway – but check other Japanese Converse retailers in the hope they offer an international shipping option.
