The technique of suspending ink in water to create swirled patterns has been around for over 2000 years, originating in China. It was later developed in 12th century Japan by Shinto priests to create the traditional Japanese art known as Suminagashi.

The swirled patterns over the uppers of the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star 70 'Suminagashi' take their inspiration from the appropriation of the technique into the psychedelic movement of the 60s and 70s. The pattern is overlaid with rubber polka dots, also a popular motif during the era, which go all the way down to the outsole. The shoe comes in two colourways – one is white with black swirls and black polka dots, the other is red with black and white.
