UPDATE: While the 90s were a long time ago, it doesn't mean we're ready to put the era behind us. Nostalgia for the time of hyper-colour is ever present in the sneaker world thanks to stellar tributes like these two ASICS GEL-DS Trainer OGs, which the Tiger Stripes have just resuscitated. Welcome them back by picking them up from stores like Fuel.

Having already rebooted the greatest hits from their early-90s catalogues, have now set their sights on a mid-decade oddity with the resurrection of the GEL-DS Trainer OG. Making its debut in 1995, the model was a high-mileage runner built to go the distance. A feather-light shoe even by today’s standards, the GEL-DS Trainer was the epitome of comfort with a monosock tongue, lightweight mesh and EVA midsoles. The shoe’s defining feature – and source of the DS code – is the Duo Sole, the segmented design that splits the grip between rubber heels and a mind-melting micro-tread in the forefoot. Looking more like a Magic Eye puzzle than a performance player, the unique sole pattern offers spectacular grip in all conditions.

For its retro return, the GEL-DS Trainer is hitting stores in two contrasting colourways. The first adopts a white base with black form stripes and matching neoprene bootie. Shades of forest green and plum accent the upper, while the DS sole steals the spotlight in neon green. The other pair opts for a black base brought to life with splashes of hot pink and aqua.

The ASICS GEL-DS Trainer will be available January 13 from select ASICS stockists, including asphaltgold.
