ASICS Mosey Up a ‘Lichen Green’ GEL-Lyte IIIRelease: 12 March 2021
The GEL-Lyte III is a staple sneaker in the ASICS stable. Characterised by its distinct split tongue and supreme comfort, the GL3 remained an underrated icon throughout the early Internet sneaker forum era, until it was propelled into slightly more mainstream by figures such as Ronnie Fieg. More than a decade on from those times – and just over 30 years since its debut – ASICS find yet another inspiration to colour up their heritage model.
This time the theme draws upon the ubiquitous olive satin flight jackets sported by everyone from street cats to bona fide fighter plane pilots. However, rather than do a simple material transplant with the typical sheeny nylon and ribbed cuff details, this GL3 uses some more practical textures. Namely, it sticks to the proven combination of suede and mesh that’s tonal ‘Lichen Green’ and paired to black contrasting Tiger Stripes, laces and lining. There is a dab of nylon in the mix on the split tongue, which actually nods back to OG specifications. Elsewhere, orange – an everlasting palette partner to olive – accents are located on the middle plastic eyelets, heel tab, and stripe edges. This is all sat atop the cushy GEL midsole.
The ASICS GEL-Lyte III ‘Lichen Green’ is out now directly from ASICS.
