ASICS Keep the GEL-Lyte III Fresh in Mesh
Collaborations may have propelled the back into the sneaker spotlight all those years ago, but in 2021 the signature split-tongued retro runner holds its own via its general release colourways. The model has achieved this by continuing to feature a healthy variety of hues and fabrics, which ASICS have this time dipped into alternative choices of suede and mesh – certifiably classic materials to use for an equally proven sneaker.
These colourways have their athletic origins with this particular material combo, even if it is a bit of an anachronism, considering ASICS moved towards lightweight nylon and microfibre by the time the GL3 released in 1990. Breathable white mesh is used copiously across the toe box, tongue, and mid panels, which is then reinforced by the sturdier suede overlays that are coloured blue and yellow. In classic tri-toned colour-blocking, ASICS include a contrasting Tiger Stripe that is expertly matched to the middle eyelets, heel clip, and outsole toe bumper. These little details can make a good colourway great. In the spirit of keeping things clean, the GEL-infused midsole is kept stark white as opposed to its usual highlighted portions on the heel, arch wedge, and medial post.
