The resurrection of the GEL-Mai was one of our 2017 highlights. The obscure side-laced sneaker was – and still is – one of the most unique designs in ASICS' catalogue. The model was treated to a bounty of colabs and releases last year, and fortunately looks like it'll remain a staple of the brand's lineup.
Following the introduction of the GEL-Mai Knit, ASICS have treated the model to its biggest makeover yet in the form of the GEL-Mai RB. The RB is a complete ground-up overhaul of the original Mai. Every element of the shoe has been redesigned with modern minimalist styling that draws on OG. The multi-panel mesh and microsuede construction has been replaced with overlapping suede inspired by kimono design. A series of slits through the lateral side and toecap provide sufficient ventilation. The freshly tooled sole unit features fuzeGEL for maximum comfort.
It's not clear what RB stands for at this stage (reborn?), but we're pleased to see such a daring evolution of the Mai. The ASICS GEL-Mai RB is available now in three colourways through select ASICS stockists, including atmos.
