ASICS and GORE-TEX go way back, with the latter providing their waterproof-breathable performance membranes to plenty of Tiger-Striped products for over 30 years. This longstanding relationship continues from strength to strength with another GEL-Lyte III GTX – and they’ve apparently figured out how to make suede impervious to liquid.

Any product that uses GORE-TEX has to undergo stringent construction and material tests to maintain their ‘guaranteed to keep you dry’ promise. This means the GL3, usually a lightweight nylon and microfibre number, is upgraded with something a little sturdier. The toebox is now made of tightly woven ripstop, while lashings of suede cover the rest of the upper. There’s even a fluffier variety used on the ankle collar and split tongue. How ASICS have achieved the waterproofing required by GTX is likely by using DWR coatings; underneath it all is the namesake GORE-TEX membrane to keep water out and simultaneously allow sweat vapour to pass.

On the colourway front, this light ‘Smoke Grey’ and ‘Putty’ combination would be unthinkable for wet and dirty conditions, but ASICS are confident enough that the GTX upgrade will make the GL3s usable in even the worst weather.

Put that to the test by picking up a pair directly from ASICS in size 4 to 13.
