The GEL-Lyte III CM 1.95 Is ASICS’ Most Planet-Friendly Sneaker Ever

asics-gel-lyte-3-cm-195

ASICS’ new GEL-Lyte III CM 1.95 is the Japanese brand’s most planet-friendly design to date, representing a mere 1.95 kg (roughly 4.3 lbs) of CO2 emissions across the product’s life cycle.

The new and improved GEL-Lyte III is the result of over 10 years of research and development and marks a major milestone on ASICS’ road to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 without compromising on quality and comfort. This is partly made possible by a new carbon-negative foam, which is derived from sugarcane.

According to an MIT study from 2013, ‘a typical pair of running shoes generates 30 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to keeping a 100-watt light bulb on for one week.’ In 2010, ASICS and MIT also partnered to accurately measure carbon-emission impact across the life cycle of a product, which includes packaging and shipping.

Speaking about the CM 1.95, Associate Professor in Materials Science and Engineering at MIT, Elsa Olivetti, remarked, ‘ASICS has developed innovative ways to reduce the impact of manufacturing, to use materials more efficiently, and to substitute new, lower impact materials.

ASICS also delivers a statement of intent by describing the shoe as a ‘blueprint that can be iterated across all of our future products.’

Responding to a question asked by Sneaker Freaker, ASICS Sustainability Expert Takao Arai explained, ‘The reason we chose the GEL-Lyte III as the base model of this project is this model is one of our most popular models. We intended this model to be a good case to expand this new initiative for the next products.’

The ASICS GEL-Lyte III CM 1.95 is slated for release in late 2023 via ASICS. Stay locked to Sneaker Freaker for more updates.
