After elevating their idiosyncratic GEL-Lyte III with the ‘Monozukuri’ collection last year, ASICS are back with a second batch of highly crafted sneakers, this time featuring the GEL-Kayano 14 and GEL-Kayano Trainer 21. ‘Monozukuri’ translates to ‘production’ – i.e. making stuff. And a Japanese company like ASICS are particularly focused on making stuff exceptionally well, which is reflected in these two leather-heavy renditions.

The GEL-Kayano 14 is a former flagship running model from ASICS’ mid-2000s catalogue. By merit of time passing, it’s now old enough to be considered retro, which opens up its lifestyle-oriented options. And the ‘Monozukuri’ concept readily embraces that, with luscious black leather uppers, contrasting cream white accents, and matching milky midsoles with black pearl GEL inserts. Thin waxed shoelaces are also premium upgrades – but don’t expect to find them on a regular pair of runners!

Meanwhile, the GEL-Kayano Trainer 21 is a new hybrid model consisting of the OG GEL-Kayano’s upper combined with the new-age midsole from the GEL-Kayano 21. The resulting sneaker is already quite radical, and ASICS up the ante with beige leather construction, save for the mesh-covered bootie fit. Leather laces and more black GEL hits make for a very attractive sneaker.

The ASICS ‘Monozukuri’ pack releases via selected retailers on February 11 for the GEL-Kayano Trainer 21, and February 13 for the GEL-Kayano 14.
