NYC Students Designed the Air Jordan 1 Mid 'Subway'
Wings started in 2015 to break down the barriers that hold the youth back and help them fly. The Wings initiative covers a variety of programs, and one of which is the Wings Design Program, working with kids with creative passions or ambitions and partnering them with the Jordan Brand Design team.
The program hosts 138 students from select cities, who each get to design an Mid centred around the theme of ‘Role Models’. After pitching and presenting their final design, a panel of Jordan Brand employees select the winner, and this year, New York City took out the win, with a design inspired by the MTA subway.
The sneaker pays homage to the MTA employees who are the heartbeat of the city, getting New Yorkers wherever they need to go in the City that Never Sleeps. The tributes to the subway are front and centre, with the grey and black upper taking after the train, and the upper being water resistant to handle the ever-changing NYC weather. 'WINGS' is placed around the heel in the coloured style of MTA train lines with ‘Thank you for all you do’ found behind the tongue. The box features the story behind the AJ1 with a silicone Jumpman tag and MTA Jordan card sticker to go along with the sneaker.
The Air Jordan 1 Mid ‘Subway’ is set to drop on May 15, 2024 in Grade School, Pre-School, and Toddler sizing, hitting Jordan Brand retailers in the Tri-State area and Nike.com. Check out the photos above and keep it locked to Sneaker Freaker for any updates.
