Trump Accuses Canadians of Shoe Smuggling

Look, Canadians — the jig is up. It’s time to quit smuggling sneakers over the border.Trump has caught you buying shoes, scuffing them and wearing them over the border to cheat tariffs. Confused? So is Trump, probably, but that’s the gist of his latest international accusations.

During a talk at the National Federation of Independent Business, Trump said that while Canada fought the world wars with the US (and he appreciates it), a story in a major newspaper (that no one can seem to find) exposed a Canadian smuggling scheme. As he tells it, people are doing this because of massive tariffs. ‘The tariffs to get common items are so high that they have to smuggle them in. They buy shoes and they wear ‘em. They scuff ‘em up. They make ‘em sound old — or look old. No, we’re treated horribly.’

As CTV News reports, the comments seem born of current trade negotiations that Trump isn’t pleased with — although he may be confusing ‘duties’, a well-established charge on items purchased internationally, with new tariffs Canada is instating on July 1.

He is right on one thing: you should stop scuffing your sneakers. C’mon now, listen to your mothers and take care of your things.
