The Sneakers Unboxed Exhibition Goes Down Under
Need an excuse to talk about sneakers all day? Well, here it is. The Sneakers Unboxed: Studio to Street exhibition explores every corner of the sneakersphere, delving deep into the archives to uncover how the humble shoe has transformed sport, performance design and fashion. It premiered in London’s The Design Museum in 2021 and has since whipped around to the Netherlands and Korea, now landing itself a sunny spot on Australian shores. The gargantuan collection will be presented at HOTA, Home of the Arts, which is a contemporary cultural precinct on the Gold Coast. Even though the exhibition hails from England, Bradley Vincent, Acting Director, Gallery and Visual Arts, says it is altered slightly to explore the ‘sneaker phenomenon through an Australian lens'.
Over 200 sneakers are in the collection, including some of Sneaker Freaker’s very own prized possessions, archival heat like the 1920 'Big 9', and straight-up fire with the . Engaging multimedia accompanies the collection, allowing visitors to jump head first into the sneaker's epic journey from sportswear accessory to cultural icon. The exhibition also answers burning questions about the most influential colabs, the materials, technology and designers responsible for breakthrough innovations, and the sustainable practices driving the industry forward. A one-of-a-kind journey complete with unseen prototypes and futuristic designs, the exhibition is a must-visit for sneakerheads.
