Release Info: WTAPS x New Balance Made in USA 990v2Release: 3 September 2021
Following a sneak peek last month, the highly anticipated WTAPS x New Balance 990v2 has officially been revealed by the Japanese streetwear imprint. Responsible for one of the best 992 collaborations of 2020, the duo reunite to put a minimalist spin on another 99x classic, adding to their ever-growing collaborative partnership. Set for a limited release across Japan, the colourway joins the 'WTAPS ACADEMY' line, which is comprised of elevated basics with an athletic flair.
Arriving in a Made in USA construction, the sneaker is an understated execution of the popular silhouette. There's soft grey suede overlays, which sit atop a steel grey mesh base, as the familiar NB branding hits are kept equally muted. A small hi-vis reflective oval on the heel adds a bit of late-night lustre, while the tongue is done in a darker shade. Inside, we get a peek at the black insoles, which feature printed logo hits from both brands.
Those with a keen eye will notice the silhouette has been reinterpreted with leather accents on the tongue, towards the collar, and on the heel tab, as inspired by WTAPS' head honcho Tetsu Nishiyama's love for another NB classic: the 998.
Releasing alongside matching co-branded apparel, the WTAPS x New Balance 990v2 drops exclusively in Japan via raffle through WTAPS stores, New Balance JP, Union Tokyo, DSMG, Ron Herman, and United Arrows & Sons. More info can be found here.
