Update May 5, 2023: RAINS and Zellerfeld have announced their ‘Puffer Sneaker’ is now available from their respective stores and is priced at $250.

‘Translating our signature puffers into a sneaker is the ultimate manifestation of RAINS in a shoe. And for us to have access to the 3D technology Zellerfeld has developed is a dream scenario for a design team. The realized product is integrated into our PU universe, offering our customers a head-to-toe option that feels signature to the design ethos at RAINS – a small piece from the runway with big impact,’ said Tanne Vinter, head of Design at RAINS.

Danish brand RAINS have progressed from providing wet weather gear to the streets to walking experimental garments down runways at Paris Fashion Week. Their latest showing at the 2023 edition took them to the next stratosphere, enlisting futuristic company Zellerfeld to 3D-print the ‘Puffer Boot’, a one-of-a-kind design offering a glimpse into the near future.

Now that RAINS are taking a fashion-forward direction, their aesthetic requires the specialised knowledge of entities like to achieve their goals. The tech side of this creation is very formidable, and according to the brands, the puffer elements are actually 90 per cent air! This means the structure, printed from a single material, remains light and flexible. It’s also the first time Zellerfeld have printed the puffer shape, adding yet another feather to their cap of advancements in the 3D-printed shoe realm.

There are currently no plans for RAINS or Zellerfeld to release the blacked-out ‘Puffer Boot’; this design is purely a demonstration of an emerging production technique. Zellerfeld also created another prototype boot – said to be the largest 3D-printed shoe made yet – for last year.
