The Pantone Colour of the Year 2022 is ‘Very Peri’

Nike Dunk Low White

Since the year 2000, Pantone have elected a ‘Colour of the Year’ that goes on to influence the world’s palette for the upcoming 12 months. For 2022, this prestigious title goes to ‘Very Peri’, an original concoction that, at first glance, is purple.

Officially known as PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri, this shade marks the first time a brand new colour has been created specifically for the annual announcement, as the previous 21 years’ picks have been a pre-existing shade in the Pantone library.

‘Very Peri brings a novel perspective and vision of the trusted and beloved blue color family, encompassing the qualities of the blues, yet at the same time with its violet red undertone, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expressions,’ said Leatrice Eiseman, the Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute.

Given the company’s ability to inform and sway how the world looks, don’t be surprised if more purple sneakers begin popping up in 2022. While it will likely never be officially recognised by an international colour body, Nike were way ahead of the purple curve with their use of ‘Viotech’ all the way back in the early 2000s – and their use of other shades of red plus blue date all the way back to the 1970s.

It looks like our very own 'Alvin Purple' was a glimpse of the future!
