Official Images: The sacai x Nike VaporWaffle ‘Sesame’
In a sneaker world defined by seasonal styles and one-off collaborative models, the Nike VaporWaffle has bucked the trend of short product cycles by appearing once again in 2021. The chimeric sneaker, expressly made for Japanese label sacai, initially emerged right at the beginning of 2020 during Paris Fashion Week, but it’d take another 10 months before they finally hit retail in a batch of colourways. Now, over a year since its debut, the sacai x Nike VaporWaffle will be returning in a new set of palettes, whereby ‘Sesame’ has been officially confirmed with these e-comm pics above.
The VaporWaffle continues the double-stacked aesthetic explored by sacai’s definitive Nike LDWaffle colab from 2019, but takes slightly more modern cues and slick lines. However, this ‘Sesame’ colourway is extremely archival, especially in its suede and nylon material mix. Spend enough time looking at sneakers, and it becomes clear there is some likely ‘inspiration’ from the circa 1984 Nike Equator (there was a similar homage called the Air Solstice a few years ago) palette – especially that contrasting ‘Blue Void’ Swoosh and heel tab. It’s clear sacai respects the architects.
It’s only imminent that official pics of the other rumoured colours and confirmed release dates will be arriving in the coming weeks. Keep it locked to SF for that.
