Nike have launched the Bot Initiated Longevity Lab, aka BILL, at Nike Town London to assist with cleaning and refurbishing customers’ worn sneakers. The experiment offers a glimpse into the near future of what Nike’s wider sustainability services can provide.

BILL can currently clean Air Force 1, Air Jordan 1, Dunk, and Space Hippie 01 models. After loading the shoes into the robot, a 3D scan is generated, whereby customers can pinpoint areas that require cleaning. According to Nike, it takes about 45 minutes to clean a pair of AF-1s. Staff members then fit new insoles and shoelaces as requested.

‘The thing is, maintaining old product is deeply personal. People will go to great lengths to care for their favourite shoes. Repairing a product is a way to extend our memory with a product. We see B.I.L.L. as a tool for being able to do that.’ says Noah Murphy-Reinhertz, sustainability lead of Nike NXT.

Curious sneakerheads can visit BILL and use its services for free at Nike Town London throughout September.
