Hopefully the intense focus on the Nike Air Max 90 (or perhaps more correctly, the Air Max III) for its 30th anniversary this year has broadened minds to the other original colourways other than ‘Infrared’ (sorry, ‘Radiant Red’) and ‘Laser Blue’. The women’s ‘Eggplant’ OG returned, and now the other other first edition palette is returning, known as the ‘Sunburst’. Though, some rose-tinted glasses need to be worn viewing these. First, a little history.

Back in 2008, JD Sports in the UK had an exclusive AM90 colourway that sneakerheads referred to as the ‘Sunburst’, and was a very sought-after sneaker because it was the first (and only, at least for a few more weeks) reissue of the OG colourway. Not to mention the logistical hurdles that needed to be cleared back to the day to procure sneakers from overseas. These days, deadstock examples are almost impossible to find. So, the return of this somewhat obscure gem should come as welcome news for many long-time AM90 fans.

The 12-year wait may just be long enough to overlook some details that don’t quite line up with the OG and 2008 retro. Namely the washed colours in the pale grey mudguard and effectively pink contrast colour, compared to the previous hot red ‘Sunburst’. The secondary blue accent now veers towards a pastel shade, while the heel Air unit is highlighted in the pink hue. By this point, hairs should begin splitting.

Stay tuned for release details.
