'Honeydew' Hits the Nike Air Trainer 1 SP

2022 is a year of many anniversaries for Nike, and one of the Swoosh's biggest sneaker celebrations is the 35th anniversary of the Air Trainer 1. An all-sport sneaker designed by the legendary Tinker Hatfield, the Air Trainer 1 has cultivated a loyal niche following in the years since its debut but it's set to surge to the front of Nike Sportswear's offerings again with models like this new 'Honeydew' colourway.

A SP (special project) release, the 'Honeydew' features the same overall last and wide, flat midsole as the original Air Trainer 1, but its embellishment is far different from previous models. The heavily panelled and patterned upper is dressed in a futuristic blend of grey and greyish blue shades, all of which are accented by 'Honeydew' collar detailing, Swooshes and midsoles. It kinda looks like a concept design from the early aughts!

Robotic colour scheme and new embellishments aside, the shoe's most notable detail is by far its buckle-secured forefoot strap. This is purely for aesthetic purposes and is a vast departure from the original Air Trainer 1's Velcro strap, which was designed to provide adjustable lockdown to suit a variety of athletic activities.

Release information for the Nike Air Trainer 1 SP 'Honeydew' has yet to be announced, but it's likely to arrive alongside the brightly-coloured 'Corriander' pair later this year.

While you wait for the Air Trainer 1 to make its comeback, be sure to brush up on your knowledge with five facts you need to know about the OG cross-trainer, all of which can be seen here.
