The year was 1987, and Nike designer Tinker Hatfield was tired of lugging multiple shoes to the gym in his duffle bag. Tinker wanted one shoe that would work for a myriad of athletic activities – hoops, weight lifting, aerobics – so he came up with the Air Trainer 1, the Swoosh's first real cross-training shoe. Now, 35 years later, the Air Trainer 1 is an icon, and its most famous colourway is the 'Chlorophyll,' inspired by the gym equipment at the Portland-area YMCA Tinker went to. It wouldn't be a proper anniversary without a celebration, so Nike are bringing back the 'Chlorophyll' in all its original glory!
Featuring a 5/8 cut upper made of white and black leather plus grey suede, the 'Chlorophyll' is centred around its signature forefoot strap, which provides customisable lockdown and technical style. The light green shade that the shoe draws its nickname from is present on the strap's branding and scattered around the tongue, top eyestays and heel as well. Though it may be a product of the images, this green shade appears to be slightly brighter than the one used in past releases.
Expect the Nike Air Trainer 1 'Chlorophyll' to release via Nike SNKRS and retailers like Asphalt Gold come March 22. It'll be priced at $125.
