The Nike Air Rift has a cult following in parts of the world, most notably in Japan and the UK. Still, it’s definitely one of the more ‘out there’ sneakers the Swoosh has ever put out. Although a few colourways have been released recently, the OG colourway is now returning for the first time since 2015.
Originally launched in 1996 and inspired by barefoot runners in Kenya, the Nike Air Rift gets its name from the country’s Great Rift Valley.
Dressed in the colours of the Kenyan flag, the sneaker features a green neoprene bootie with the same material overlaid in black. The signature design feature is the split toe with straps placed across the midfoot and heel to help secure the foot without laces. Red accents the sneaker, with the Swoosh stitched on the lateral side of the toebox and Nike branding stitched on the heel strap. The white midsole features encapsulated Air units in the forefoot and heel, with a black rubber outsole finishing off the sneaker.
The Nike Air Rift ‘Kenya’ is expected to release later this year via Nike’s channels and at select retailers. Keep it locked to Sneaker Freaker for updates.
