This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Nike Air Max 97 so, besides from some OG colourways returning, the brand looks to rework some classic combinations from their wider catalogue onto the popular model. ‘Bred’, or black and red, has appeared on the AM97 countless times, but the Swoosh are able to keep it fresh every time it appears. This edition achieves that by changing up the materials on the upper.
There’s not much to report on the colourway front as it’s pretty much an all black upper with choice red accents on the Swoosh branding, heel tab and outsole accents. However, a closer study of the materials reveals an impressive depth of texture. The main mudguards are tumbled leather, which is a nice change from smooth synthetic. This is then met by grill-like mesh underlays for the remainder of the top section, before being overlaid by reflective strips, just like the OG editions. This time however, the reflective remains black when not shone on for a stealthy look. Of course, being the AM97, the soles have Air cushioning the entirety of its length.
