It’s not 1986, but for Nike and their retooled Air Max 1, it is! For Air Max Day 2023, Team Swoosh tasked themselves with bringing back the legendary Air Max 1 ’86 Big Bubble, a mythical version of the silhouette that featured a larger midsole Air unit. Back when this pair first hit shelves, there was a recall due to major cracking in the midsole because of the bubble’s size. One for the history books; Air-heads have been patiently awaiting the follow-up releases of wider-release colourways, and they’ve finally arrived.

Following a reveal that Nike created four additional iterations of the AM1 ’86, which were limited to 1986 pairs and given to vendors of the Black Market Flea, a swathe of official imagery has surfaced of a ‘Smokey Mauve’, ‘Light Silver’ and ‘Light Armoury Blue’. Now, a fresh ‘Dark Team Red’ iteration has surfaced, and it’s set to drop soon.

Tri-tone colour-blocking adorns the upper, utilising a brown ‘Smokey Mauve’ and the namesake red hue as the suede overlays, with additional lighter mesh underlays and a slightly tinted midsole. Nike Air branding is present throughout, alongside a subtle mustard-coloured insole. This pair will also come housed in the special Air Max 1 ’86 box.

So far, a release date hasn’t been locked in for the Nike Air Max 1 ’86 ‘Dark Team Red’, but official imagery is out, meaning it shouldn’t be too far away.
