Nike are preparing to put some spice in sneakerheads’ lives with the imminent arrival of the Air Force 1 ‘Chilli Pepper’ that forms part of the model’s 40th anniversary releases. Food-inspired makeups are nothing new in the shoe world, but this particular edition takes things quite literally with its picante mix of colours that could land on the upper end of the Scoville scale.

As revealed by leakers @prvt.selection, these AF-1s take on the salsa selection of chilli colours including green, orange and red, which is all bordered by alternating panels of tortilla yellow. An embroidered chilli pepper on the heel counter makes the inspiration pretty clear, but to further solidify the theme, the spice continues. The edge of the tonal yellow midsole is rimmed red, simulating a pair of lips that have had a little bit too much spice. Conversely, it’s reminiscent of the candle wax Homer Simpsons coats on his lips before eating Chief Wiggum’s chilli and subsequently hallucinating with a ‘Space Coyote’ voiced by Johnny Cash. One digresses.
