Update February 4, 2022: After releasing in global regions, Australia is set to receive a small run of the New Balance 990v5 'Vegan Friendly' at Up There. They will be available on February 5 at 12AM AEDT.

Update January 10, 2022: Following an early drop almost two months ago, the New Balance 990v5 'Vegan Friendly' will be releasing widely at boutique retailers including SEVENSTORE, Norse Store and END. on January 21.
The is certainly in its twilight years, and the arrival of its v6 successor is imminent. To send off their flagship model, they're attempting a 'Vegan Friendly' remake that not only looks and feels as good as the original, but is also more amicable for all.
NB’s Made In USA line has always prided itself on the finest materials and construction, with the 990 series up until now always using pigskin suede for a majority of its uppers. The brand is changing the conversation with this vegan alternative to animal hides, while appearing to have the same nap and hand feel as the regular versions. Given NB’s stringent quality control, it’s unlikely there’s been any compromise on this front, especially considering the premium they rightfully charge for their USA product.
New vegan materials aside, the same old 990v5 that’s been adored for the past few years is still here. The squishy insoles work in tandem with ENCAP-reinforced midsoles for serious mile logging (it is a running shoe after all), the mesh remains fresh, and the padded lining and tongue needs to be felt to be truly appreciated.
