When people zig, Ronnie Fieg zags. The Kith founder and frequent collaborator has taken to Twitter to tease his latest collaborative project with New Balance. Rather than hero in-vogue styles like the 2002R or 992, he revisits the relatively recently discontinued 990v4. He also reprises the familiar grey, purple and pink used on his earlier collaboration with NB and Japan’s United Arrows – that collaboration itself a throwback to a previous era in the sneakersphere.

There’s actually quite a lot that can be done with the 990v4’s multilayered panels, and Fieg takes full advantage of this. The base is grey, sure, but there’s already at least three different shades on show, each represented by luxurious leathers, suedes and mesh. But that is clearly not enough to satisfy the UA inspiration as copious amounts of purple and pink accents line the inserts before leading up to the black tongue and laces. Even the midsole goes two-tone with the heel pad taking on creamy yellow in reference to the previous versions.

This teaser will be followed by imminent release details, which Fieg and Kith are yet to reveal. What’s known for sure is the shoes won’t be sitting around for long.
