This New Balance 2002R Seemingly Channels the Kawasaki 993
New Balance 2002R colourways are becoming increasingly self-referential with multiple pairs hitting the market featuring borrowed palettes from archival models and deep palette cuts. This upcoming green pair continues this movement, as it seemingly references the obscure Kawasaki Ninja 993 that flew under the radar a decade ago.
As shown by @bigoldes91, these 2002Rs use a classic mix of suede overlays and mesh inserts, arranged with a heavy slant on green across the upper. The mesh is black, which is then trimmed by white synthetic on the toe box and ankle collar, whereby the model name is spelled out. The N logo also displays ’N-ERGY’ in reference to the cushioning technology used on the model’s midsoles.
The on-the-nose reference to the Kawasaki 993 continues sole side, whereby the midsole forefoot is blacked out, just like its apparent inspiration. And the heel portion is rendered grey, identical to the 993’s two-toned midsoles. Even the forefoot outsole tread accent is white.
For casual NB fans, this is just another good looking 2002R. But for the intelligentsia, this is very a much a ‘I see what you did there’ moment. Nice work New Balance – now they just have to release them.
