Moolah Kicks: Paving the Way for Gender Equality in Basketball
Moolah Kicks, the first basketball sneaker brand set up exclusively for female ballers, recently launched their first model as they continue their push for gender equality. The brand was founded in 2019 by Natalie White, a NYC native who grew up playing basketball, but was constantly frustrated by the many gender inequalities she found between the men’s and women’s game. With that in mind, Moolah Kicks are on a mission to make sneakers fit specifically for female ballers.
Designing and building their sneaker to biomechanically support the unique female foot shape, Moolah Kicks are enabling female athletes to play to their very best. The new model offers multidirectional tread for maximum grip, with the horizontal herringbone outsole enabling clean pivots and push offs. Support for your feet is reinforced by the unique female fit build, with solid lockdown laces widening towards the ankle. There’s also an EVA midsole for energy return, and each pair is lighter than the average men’s alternative.
The name ‘Moolah’ was chosen for two main reasons: referencing the slang word has positive connotations in the street culture of basketball, and also highlighting the need for greater financial investment and opportunity within women’s basketball. In addition to their sole focus on women’s basketball, Moolah Kicks also donate a percentage of their profits to charities that advocate for gender/race/LGBTQ+ issues. And the brand passionately encourages athletes to take pride in both their identity as women and athletic prowess on the basketball court.
The Moolah Kicks shoe box backs up the brand’s philosophy, and is designed to highlight the gap in viewership between men’s and women’s basketball. The outer blue and yellow colours signify the ratio of the average attendance of NCAA men’s versus women’s games in 2019. Then, when you open the box, you’ll see a packed crowd surrounding a basketball court – a prediction for the future when women’s games will have sold out stands at every level. As women’s attendance continues to grow, Moolah Kicks will adjust the ratio of yellow to blue on their shoe box to reflect the shift.
You can now preorder to own a pair of Moolah Kicks’ first sneaker release by visiting their website. The shoe comes in a choice of either a white or grey colourway. Moolah are crowdfunding this initial release to help raise the capital necessary to finance the production run of this first model. So, your preorder will enable the first production run of Moolah Kicks. The estimated shipping date for your pair is November this year. Moolah chose crowdfunding to align with their ethos of being a brand that is by female ballers, and for female ballers.
