,Matthew M Williams and Nike Are Getting In on the Clogcore Craze
Just like his peer Virgil Abloh, Matthew M Williams is a master of juggling multiple roles and making it look easy. When he's not preoccupied with creative direction for Givenchy or crafting new collections for 1017 ALYX 9SM (his own brand), he's a frequent Nike collaborator – and he recently took to his Instagram to reveal his latest effort with the Swoosh, a jet-black MMW x Nike foam clog.
The clog's sharp angles and intricate construction are familiar to any fans of Williams and Nike's work, as they call to mind images of the Zoom MMW 4, a shoe that looked like it was taken straight out of Mad Max. In the videos of the shoes that Williams posted to his Instagram (which can be seen in the carousel below), he shows off their cored-out construction and array of perforations. We've got a feeling that these babies are feather-light!
Williams and Nike's clog design is joining an increasingly crowded market that's skyrocketed in popularity since 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic forced sneaker lovers and fashionistas alike to rethink their footwear choices, making the ease and convenience offered by clogs more appealing than ever. Since then, styles like Salehe Bembury and Crocs' fingerprint-inspired Pollex Clog, Kanye West's Yeezy Foam Runner and Merrell's sleek Hydro Moc have exploded in popularity – and even the Crocs Classic Clog, a shoe that was once viewed as thoroughly uncool, has garnered a great deal of cultural cachet. Even adidas and Jordan Brand are set to bring their own clogs to market later this year!
A release date for the MMW x Nike clog has yet to be announced, but Williams' ALYX SS23 runway show is going down on June 17 so we may have more info on a drop date then. Stay tuned!
