Online marketplace eBay has just announced the launch of a sneaker authentication service. Already in operation, the service ensures all new and pre-owned sneakers sold on the platform in the US over $100 will be legit-checked. The company says the goal is to have all $100+ sneaker sales authenticated by 2021.

‘Authentication has become an expectation for todays consumers in categories of high passion and high value, and this program makes eBay the most attractive platform for enthusiasts in these categories,’ says Jordan Sweetnam, SVP and General Manager of eBay North America.

‘eBay operates the worlds most diverse sneaker marketplace – with the widest selection and best prices – and by removing any uncertainty with the buying process, our community can buy and sell with total confidence.’

To help with the launch of the service, eBay have partnered with SneakerCon to open a new authentication centre, which will be staffed by ‘an independent team of experts’. Purchased sneakers will be put through a vigorous legit check process, and an eBay hangtag will then be attached to the sneakers once everything is confirmed to be authentic. The same authentication process applies to shoppers who choose to make a return, ensuring the exact item sold is being returned to the seller in its OG form.

It may be nothing new, but we applaud any effort to weed out fakes from the market. Happy and safe copping, sneakerheads!
