Luxury Sneaker Brands to be Covered by eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee
Major marketplaces like have proactively ensured rigorous practices when it comes to buying and selling coveted kicks on their platform. Now, they’re also confident in ensuring shoes from designer labels traded on the ‘bay are fully legit. As global regions expand their programs, eBay Australia are now offering their Authenticity Guarantee to include brands including , and .
The Authenticity Guarantee is applied to new and pre-owned sneakers bought and sold on eBay Australia over the value of $150. Sold items undergo a stringent visual validation process from eBay’s authenticators, which is then recorded and traceable via an encrypted digital certificate contained within a NFC tag attached to the shoes.
This strengthened process follows eBay’s acquisition of Sneaker Con’s authentication business in November 2021. Before then, the two companies were already partnered to legit check sneakers from major sportswear brands like and , but the major investment by eBay means their expertise can now cover more expensive brands where it can sometimes be almost impossible to distinguish the counterfeit item from the real deal.
‘More than 1.5-million sneakers have been authenticated globally on eBay in just over a year, demonstrating just how popular this service has been,’ says eBay Australia’s Sophie Onikul. ‘Sneakers are a billion dollar industry in Australia and as more brands enter the market, including highly sought after luxury designers, the demand from sneakerheads and sneaker flippers continues to grow.’
