Update October 31, 2022: Following the news that Christie’s were auctioning off the infamous Nike Air Yeezy prototypes Ye wore at the 2008 Grammy Awards, the auction house has now announced it will no longer be doing so and that private sales have been cancelled. A Christie’s spokesperson told Artnet, ‘We are not selling any of this material nor do we have any plans to.’
The pairs were previously auctioned via Sotheby’s, selling for a mega $1.8 million, making them among the most valuable sneakers in history.
Auction house Christie’s have seen their fair share of ultra-rare sneakers, streetwear and collectibles in recent years – so many that they’ve launched ‘Department X’ to group these unicorn items.
This year alone, Christie’s sold a Michael Jordan Upper Deck Signed 1986 Fleer #57 Rookie Card for $1,008,000 and a pair of game-worn and signed 1997–1998 Air Jordan 13s for $378,000. These are the sorts of items that fit into Department X.
Lots in this collection will be sold via online auction events in New York, but select pieces are available through Christie’s Private Sales year-round. Given the incredibly rarefied status of these items, don’t expect to see prices publicly disclosed for most sales.
Available now is a pair of Nike Air Yeezy prototypes worn by Kanye West at the 2008 Grammy Awards and a pair of unreleased ,Air Jordan 6s created in memory of his mother, Donda West. These form part of the ‘Ye Walks’ private sale collection.
