There’s a humorous scene from 1984 rock mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap where eponymous band Spinal Tap perform the song ‘Big Bottom’. It opens with the line ‘the bigger the cushion, the sweeter the pushin’ – that’s what I said.’ While it can’t be confirmed whether the designers at adidas had this scene on their mind when designing the UltraBOOST 23, it certainly can be correlated that this new model channels the spirit of the song. Those midsoles are yuge.

As shown by sneaker leaker @ woganwodeyang, the supposed UltraBOOST 23 takes the already sizeable BOOST midsoles of the incumbent 22 edition and stacks on even more of the squishy stuff. What serves as a point of difference in this design – which, for most of its parts, resembles the current version – is the way the heel pad forks into two distinct sections rather than the tapered point. Perhaps this is to offer more stability on impact, especially considering the additional cushioning on offer.

Elsewhere, the upper appears to tweak its Primeknit cushioning here and there, while the minimal external hardware is adjusted slightly at the heel counter to transition into the new midsole. On the colourway front, this edition appears to nod to the OG black and purple of the debut UB from 2015.

Stay tuned for the official announcement from adidas.
