The Top 5 Shaq Commercials of All Time
Shaquille O’Neal, one of the most nuclear NBA centres in history, forged an impressive career posterising rookies, emasculating egos, and shattering backboards, eventually earning him four championship rings, 15 All-Star appearances, and three NBA Finals MVPs. But the 7ft 1, 325 pound Newark product was also making moves off-court, making more money from endorsements and commercials than he ever did from his lucrative, 20-year playing career.
These are Shaq Diesel's top 5 moments on the tube.
5. PROTECT THE RIM
Rimology, the kind of terminology slurred at 4am to intellectually justify a host of debased desires, was also used by Shaq back in 1993 to provide a philosophy of basketball. Shaq recites a poem, mentally and physically proving that absolutely no rim is ‘Shaq proof’. Although largely obscured from Shaq’s sneaker catalogue, the Shaq Attaq 2 nevertheless had one of the more influential ad campaigns running alongside the sneaker.
4. WE TALKIN' BOUT PANTS
A modern rendition of the trash talk taking place in barber shops across America. Allen Iverson goes full meta in this Reebok commercial with a reference to his bizarre press conference back in 2006, while the Rain Man steps in to spit credentials at Shaq and co. A classic built from a simple concept: how tight are you wearing your pants?
3. SHAQ VS SHAQ VS SHAQ
In 1995, Reebok rendered multiple iterations of Shaq’s larger-than-life personality, the two teams locked at 194 apiece after seven overtimes. Featuring Instapump tech, Shaq Diesel was repping 1994’s Shaq Attaq 4, the high-top sneaker getting its first retro 20 years later in 2014. The most absurd aspect of this Reebok Shaq Attaq 4 commercial?
Shaq hit a fucking three ...
2. SHOOT, PASS, SLAM
Who knows if Shaq could’ve improved his game by spending a little less time on the beats and a little more time at the free throw line, but this ‘Shoot, Pass, Slam’ commercial that originally aired during Super Bowl XXXVIII is so gloriously over the top it perhaps vindicates all of Shaq’s cooked extra-curricular activities. Punctured by some heavy beats and lyrical recapitulation, the ‘Shoot, Pass, Slam’ commercial is a totally authentic product of its time.
1. FAKE THE FUNK ON A NASTY DUNK
Shaq, Russell, Chamberlain, Kareem and Walton all converge in the most star-studded Reebok advertisement in history. Inexplicable, Terminator-style CGI combines with fat 1980s synth work and a signature Shaq throwdown to provide one of the most memorable commercials of all time. Shaq was wearing his first signature sneaker with the Reebok brand: the OG Shaq Attaq Pump. The leather and suede build featured fresh pump tech on the tongue and Graphlite.
Check out the greatest Shaq commercial in history and remember: Don’t fake the funk on a nasty dunk!
