The 99X Series is the Pinnacle New Balance Experience
The New Balance 99X series is synonymous with uncompromising quality and the most advanced footwear technology available. Whether it’s their archival classics or contemporary legends-to-be, NB have kept some of their greatest 99X runners in regular rotation for all to enjoy. These are some of the finest sneakers money can buy right now, direct from New Balance.
New Balance 992 Black/Grey (M992EB)
The 992 has some very impressive performance credentials that have earned it respect beyond the sneakersphere. Its greatest endorsee was the late Steve Jobs, whose rousing Apple product launches were no doubt helped by the fact he was wearing super comfortable sneakers. Fifteen years since it launched to mark NB’s centenary, the 992 is now back in easy-to-wear black and grey. Nothing’s changed: premium pigskin suede, cushy ABZORB SBS soles, and Made In USA quality starting from size 4 all the way up to size 13.
New Balance 990v5 Women’s Black/Grey (W990BK5)
The 990v5 is the incumbent flagship silhouette of the 99X series. Development for the original 990 began way back in 1978, so version five is packing over four decades of expertise, and is the most advanced iteration to date. Despite the technowizardry doing its thing under the bonnet, the Made In USA silhouette remains approachable thanks to its familiarity. Suede and mesh maintains a long-running NB tradition, while the latest generation of ENCAP cushioning ensures reliable support day in, day out. The 990v5 is a perfect daily driver, especially in black.
New Balance 997 Grey/Orange (M997PT)
New Balance may typically be associated with utilitarian shades like grey, black and navy, but they definitely aren’t afraid of some colour. After all, their nylon runners from the 1970s were among some of the brightest. This Made In USA 997 echoes the bright spirit of its forefathers by swapping out its plainer palettes for a vibrant shade of citrus orange on the toe box and ankle collar, plus some ultramarine blue accents. The rest is wrapped in velvety sand suede. Sun’s out, NB 997s out!
New Balance 991 Pink/Grey (W991PNK)
Flimby is a significant location for New Balance because that is where the finest sneakers are manufactured in England. And the 991 is just one of the key models still produced in the quaint Lake District area, ever since its inception in 2001. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the first 99X sneaker of the new millennium, so New Balance mark the occasion with some new colourways – including this all-pink affair, which actually references a colourful pack from the late 2000s.
New Balance 996 Black/Summer Fog (CM996CPC)
Despite it being a higher number in the 99X series, the 996 is actually one of the oldest models, dating back to 1988. Its somewhat lesser known status has helped it maintain a bit of a cult following, especially over in Japan. The 996 cuts a sharp silhouette, boasts one of the larger MCDs in the range, and this version’s C-CAP cushioning still holds its own. This particular colourway also boasts some interesting anachronisms, such as the flying NB logo on the toe bumper.
