The Air Zoom Spiridon Colourways Nike Need to Bring Back
Arriving in 1997, perennial was named after Spyridon Louis, who won the gold medal for marathon running in the 1896 Olympics. And while sneakerheads adore this silhouette, the Spiridon has never had commercial success. In 2019’s , it was said: ‘There are sneakers that are easy to love and have legions of fans, and then there are exotics that appeal only to the tastes of ultra aficionados. Case in point is the Air Zoom Spiridon.’
Following its late-90s debut, Team Swoosh blessed the Zoom Spiridon with a string of retro releases during 2005 and 2006, and then again later between 2016-2018. Now, all signs are pointing to a Spiridon return in 2024. The OG ‘Sport Red’ aka ‘Desert Red’ colourway is already rumoured to be locked in for Team Swoosh’s 2024 Holiday catalogue. While we’re elated since this iteration hasn’t been seen since 2016 as a NikeLab silhouette, there are more Air Zoom Spiridons Team Swoosh should retro, stat!
Nike Air Zoom Spiridon ‘Sport Blue’ (1997, 2005)
Alongside the OG ‘Desert Red’ and a slew of women’s releases in 1997, Nike also used the now fan-favourite ‘Sport Blue’ to help debut the Spiridon to the world. They’re lesser known than their red counterpart, but that crisp blue mesh deserves a retro nonetheless.
Nike Air Zoom Spiridon ‘Concord’ (1997)
You can’t go wrong with a little bit of ‘Concord’, especially on the Nike Air Spiridon. This heater dropped in 1997 and boasted crisp white mesh uppers with deep blue mudguard that had punters swooning.
Nike Air Zoom Spiridon ‘Volt’ (2018)
The ‘Volt’ tone is an icon in Nike’s ever-growing arsenal of colourways, and it adorned the Spiridon back in 2018. Not that it’s a mind blowing change, but the solid colour ‘Volt’ Swoosh on the Spiridon is crispy AF. We need these back for our hot sneakerhead summer fits.
Nike Air Zoom Spiridon ‘Olympic’ (2016)
Rio hosted the Olympics in 2016, and Nike blessed the world with an array of themed colourways to celebrate. The Spiridon was included and came correct in a USA-themed combo, equipped with a metallic gold Swoosh. The Paris Olympics are coming up in July – so it’s perfect timing for Nike to bring ‘em back. We want to rock these while watching the 100 metre sprints!
Nike Air Zoom Spiridon ‘Anthracite’ (2017)
Dubbed the ‘Anthracite’, this 2017 banger came correct with blacked-out midsoles featuring subtle yellow speckling. The purple mesh and nylon tongue had us smacking our lips, but my oh my, the gradient Swoosh was chef’s kiss.
Nike Air Zoom Spiridon ‘Platinum’ (2018)
We couldn’t include the ‘Anthracite’ and not include the ‘Platinum’ from the year following. This pair was for all those heads who can’t pass up a black and white sneak for everyday use, kitted with that oh so stunning gradient Swoosh.
