Lacoste Link the L001 and L002 to Heritage and a New Generation

Lacoste L001 and L002

Lacoste are calling game, set and match in 2022 with the latest addition to their court-inspired roster. Joining the L001 is the numerically and stylistically progressive L002, which collides the classic ‘Croco’ with a new generation of creatives.

Let’s compare the pair and play doubles with Lacoste’s latest.

L001

The L001 didn’t just materialise from thin air. Lacoste have been around since 1933, so there’s almost 90 years of history for the brand to draw upon. As such, there are plenty of heritage nods and clever additions befitting a brand built on cultivating the crocodile spirit.

At a glance, it looks like the L001 came from the archives, but it’s an entirely new model. Of course, there are elements drawn from an extensive history that was a dynamic and exciting time for tennis players and products – especially those adorned with Lacoste’s idiosyncratic ‘Croco’ motif – so naturally there are references to that bountiful era. Stylistically, the model is archetypical of transitional court designs, but what is unique to the L001 is its source material. Lacoste’s metamorphosis as a leading tennis brand is exemplified here, as an archival racquet design informs the tapered lines and detailed panelling of the upper.

It goes even deeper to the René, the eponymous sneaker designed by company founder René Lacoste, which provides plenty of signature cues for the L001. Similarly, a new generation of stylish sneakerheads can make the design a part of their rotation. Of course, updated tread, terry lining and ample perforations help meet the demands of modern life.

L002

Of course, Lacoste never intended the L001 to stand alone for long. Enter the L002, a literal elevation of its companion’s design points that also introduces its own original elements for female-focused footwear.

A tweaking of its panelling and hardware sees components including D-ring lace loops and oversized pull tabs brought front and centre. These pragmatic elements work in tandem with the original tread pattern that not only pays homage to classic tennis shoes with its herringbone traction, but cleverly incorporates a tennis ball motif into the forefoot pivot – a direct celebration of Lacoste’s rich sporting heritage. The external heel clip and reinforced toe bumpers help lock in all lifestyle needs.

Fashion is given equal weighting to function on the L002, which is clearly seen by its eye-catching colours and timeless preppy styling – the latter something Lacoste has exemplified for decades. Neapolitan tones of pastel pink and blue meet Lacoste’s familiar green. This combination is finished off with a gum rubber textured raised midsole, elevating all outfits. The model’s newest colours also step onto the court via sporty combos of lime green and navy blue.
