Exceeding CXpectations: Converse’s 2021 CX Lineup is the Future of Comfort
Sequels aren’t always box office hits, and after the introduction of Converse’s CX Line in 2020, ‘Part II’ was always going to be a tough follow-up. However, the iconic brand has introduced some fascinating new additions to the game-changing lineup, taking the next-level comfort benefits, ease of wear, and a progressive design ethos to never-before-seen heights.
The all-new 2021 CX models make use of Converse’s aptly named ‘CX Toolkit’ to deliver more comfort to the range than the debut drop – yes, we’re serious. Improving on the cushiest Converse creations ever was never going to be easy, but these new members of the CX universe promise to please even the harshest crep critics.
To say the first CX line was a rousing success would be a gross understatement. To meet demand, the product series has grown by more than 15 times since its original release, and its influence has filtered into the entirety of the Converse canon. In fact, the brand hopes that by early 2022, all classic Chuck Taylor All Stars in the market will feature upgraded comfort benefits derived from the CX toolkit.
‘At Converse, we are incredibly proud of our heritage, which serves as a point of departure for a Design and Innovation approach that’s pushing our brand to new space,’ says Phil Russo, VP of Global Design and Innovation.
‘We are taking iconic favourites, including the Chuck Taylor All Star… and enhancing them with CX in response to consumer insights to drive comfort improvements. At the same time, the design team continues to explore, evolve and iterate our design language – creating future-forward style.’
The CX has come full circle – quite literally – adopting a 360-degree approach, evolving the expression and experience of the line’s technologies. The toolkit is best defined by CX foam, which enhances impact absorption and maximises long-lasting wear. Meanwhile, 2021 sees advancements in the following areas:,
Fit: Delivering overfoot comfort and ease of wear through foams and materials like the brand’s stretch canvas – which adapts to the foot and enables easy on-off.
Ride: Ensuring both underfoot comfort, new proportions, and stance using CX foam and EVA foams.
Stride: Most new CX styles are supported by new rubber outsole designs for traction and durability.
All of these advancements mean exciting times for CX, and the 2021 festivities are kicking off with a revamped Chuck Taylor All Star CX, and head-turning Run Star Motion.
The embodiment of ‘something old, with something new’, the 2021 Chuck Taylor All Star CX and Chuck Taylor All Star Low CX arrive to carry on the legacy of the greatest sneaker of all time. The former debuts in a bold black stretch canvas upper, while the most notable aesthetic upgrades include a black semi-transparent foxing that showcases the classic midsole, giving the icon an energised, contemporary look. Of course, CX foam keeps you cosy, while a comfortable tongue and a pull tab at the rear makes slipping into these new Chucks a breeze.
Additionally, fans of the classic all-white sneaker will appreciate the subtle details on the Low. It may have a lower profile, but it doesn’t skimp on any of the benefits of its higher-cut cousin, also arriving with stretch canvas and CX foam. Again, a translucent midsole is used, but this one is done in a milky tone, with the familiar Converse branding stamped on the heel.
These aren’t your dad’s Chucks – that’s for sure!
The CX Line Scales New Heights
Building on the popularity of the Run Star Hike, the unisex Run Star Motion CX has been designed from the bottom up, introducing an elevated stance and lightweight comfort through not only the CX foam, but also an encapsulated EVA foam midsole, plus a newly engineered outsole.
Despite giving it neck-craning looks, Converse haven’t diverged too far from a winning formula for the Run Star Motion CX, making use of an organic cotton canvas upper like the OG. Meanwhile, the exaggerated, wavy platform and sculptural lugs provide lift, traction, and a truly mind-bending aesthetic that’s sure to turn plenty of heads.
The Run Star Motion CX debuted in a runway-ready black and white colourway, with just a touch of colour thanks to the ‘Honey Gum’ sole tread. And now, a new colourway has entered the mix, covered in creamy neutral hues that tone down the contrast seen on its predecessor. It’s safe to say the wheels are truly in motion for CX in 2021!
