Damian From BespokeIND Reveals His Favourite Sneaker Projects
Melbourne-based sneaker atelier BespokeIND have garnered quite the reputation over the years for their hyper-detailed, hand-built crep creations. Whether it’s an exclusive rebuild of an all-time classic, or a wacky ‘n wild one-of-one, the BespokeIND boys bring an unparalleled eye for detail to the mix, crafting sneakers that go beyond the label of being a mere ‘custom’. Having worked with everything from Aussie Rules footballs to the highest quality luxury leathers, founder Damian Sim continues to pour his soul into every sole he fashions.
He proudly labels every sneaker project he’s completed as one of his ‘babies’, but there’s a select few that hold an extra special place in his heart. Here’s a look at Damian’s all-time favourite BespokeIND creations.
Nike Air Max 1 ‘Off-White’ Pack – Black Edition
For Damian, this was ‘the one that started it all’.
Back in 2017, Virgil Abloh made a bold claim upon the official reveal of his debut collaboration with Nike, stating that each of the shoes in ‘The Ten’ could be produced ‘by making a trip to your local store, and using tools you have at home’. Heeding the Off-White founder’s DIY advice, the crew at BespokeIND decided to put this claim to the test, resulting in unique renditions of the ,Air Max 1 inspired by the collection's deconstructed aesthetic.
Perhaps the ultimate compliment, Virgil personally ordered a pair of the ‘Black Edition’ AM1s prior to touching down in Sydney to host an event for ‘The Ten’ in partnership with Supply Store and BespokeIND.
Nike Air Mars Yard 2.0 Footscape Hybrid/Air Jordan 3 Mars Yard Overshoe ‘Fireproof’
Inspired by the Tom Sachs x Nike ‘Mars Yard’ collaboration, BespokeIND created a special two-sneaker pack featuring an Air Jordan 3 and a hybrid Nike Footscape. Utilising the Mars Yard Overshoe factory OEM lacing components, and fireproof fibreglass textiles, Damian handcrafted an entire complete Jordan 3 concept with a factory Nike Overshoe midsole. With a mind-boggling two-in-one concept build, the Mars Yard 2.0 upper can attach to the Footscape midsole!
‘This is one from the BespokeIND archives,’ says Damian. ‘It’s definitely the most complex handmade build we’ve done to date – and likely the world’s first fireproof Jordan!’
Nike SB Dunk Low ‘Lego’
‘Everyone loves LEGO, no matter how old you are,’ says Damian. ‘Every individual has their own story to tell interacting with these interlocking blocks of fun.’
Telling his own tale, Damian handcrafted a Nike SB Dunk Low which encapsulated that feeling of ‘fun and play’. Aside from the luxe mixture of suede and leather, the Nike Dunk Low SB ‘LEGO’ can be further customised by genuine LEGO pieces, which can be attached to the tongue tag.
‘This is a concept I have always wanted to conceptualise on a sneaker, and one of those projects close to my heart.’
