Celebrating Jeremy Scott's Weirdest Sneakers
Sneaker designers love to claim they’re disruptive, but few have jolted the senses like Jeremy Scott. Before Vetements was skewering Reeboks, before Sankuanz was making sneaker sole strap-ons, Scott was letting his inner furry create herds of the craziest creations footwear had ever seen.
Whether you think his designs are crimes against shoe-manity, or just the cheeky exploitation of a loophole, you can't argue with his influence (years later, the Balenciagas of the world are only just catching up to his sense of humour). So, in the spirit of fun, we’re celebrating Jeremy Scott’s 42nd birthday by looking back at his weirdest sneakers.
JEREMY SCOTT x ADIDAS POODLE
Released: February 2, 2013
If you needed a poster-sneaker for the work Scott did with adidas, it's this. The Poodle comprises two high-top sneakers skinned in what looks like long terry cloth and affixed with dog heads wearing sunglasses — that slide up! The way adidas gave Scott carte blanche to do whatever he pleased doesn't only make us wonder if he had dirt on a CEO, it also shows the foundations of an influencer program only just coming into its own today.
JEREMY SCOTT x ADIDAS LEOPARD
Released: Spring 2012
When we interviewed Jeremy Scott he swore he didn't roam with a clowder of furries in his spare time ('I know what that is... plushie? Noooo I’m not!) but the Leopard has us wondering. The junior version is safe, but there's something about an adult wearing tails that sets off alarm bells.
JEREMY SCOTT x ADIDAS GORILLA
Released: March 3, 2012
First seen at a spring/summer preview at Berlin's Bread and Butter, this pair of primates are among Scott's most apeshit designs. The cute Kongs came with trefoil t-shirts that you could take off to make the look 'Triple Black' — just in case, you know, you didn't want to stand out.
JEREMY SCOTT x ADIDAS SHARK
Released: October 2015
Any Fonzy-esque allusions to 'jumping the shark' aren't lost here. Coming at the tail-end of his adidas output, this half-shark, half-car concoction steps away from familiar furry-footwear to see how far Jeremy could go and still get away with it.
JEREMY SCOTT x ADIDAS WINGS 3.0 'DARK KNIGHT'
Released: October 31, 2014
So you think you know fashion? You merely adopted it. Jeremy Scott was born in it, moulded by it. He didn't see a dad shoe until he was already a man; by then, it was nothing but trash to him. Nicknamed the 'Dark Knight', this Wings silhouette followed 2013's A$AP Rocky colab on the 2.0 version, and is the gateway sneaker to great Scott's catalogue.
JEREMY SCOTT x ADIDAS TEDDY BEAR 'CAMO'
Released: March 16, 2013
The ultimate in tactical ursine footwear, this 'Camo' Bear is what happens when Paddington goes Rambo. Don't let the goofy smile and panelled cap fool you, these sneakers won't sleep until you've met a grizzly end.
JEREMY SCOTT x ADIDAS PANDA
Released: July 22, 2011
Jack Black and Ling Xiaoyu's bodyguard are the most-famed kung fu pandas today, but back in 2011 Jeremy Scott's Pandas were the biggest bear kicking off. Its IRL inspiration has since moved off the endangered list, but healthy pairs of these are nearly extinct in the wild.
JEREMY SCOTT x ADIDAS WINGS 2.0 'FLAMES',
Released: January 6, 2011
Apple only added the official Emoji keyboard to iOS in 2011, so these 'Flames' Wings 2.0s were fire before we could accurately express it. Even though you could only pull them off in a New Orleans rap video, these are still one of the most palatable pairs in Scott's collection.
JEREMY SCOTT x ADIDAS TEDDY BEAR 'PINK'
Released: February 24, 2011
Speaking of New Orlean's Rap, Lil Wayne was a big fan of the Teddy Bear, and even debuted the design at a new year's eve event. Jeremy said he was stoked on the cosign of what went on to be his best-selling sneaker. 'I couldn’t have imagined a better fit. It’s like, OK, here he comes out of jail you know, the toughest, tattooed dude and then he’s got the Bears on. So that was a really big plus for me. I loved that.'
