The Best Grinch-Themed Sneakers (So Far!)
The Grinch may have wanted nothing more than to steal Christmas, but when it comes to sneakers, he sure as anything steals the limelight too! Over the years, a number of brands, from Reebok to Nike, have looked to Dr. Seuss’ hairy troublemaker for inspiration, bringing to life some rather lurid, incredibly furry and sometimes festive concoctions as well. Check out the best Grinch-themed sneakers below. Think you’d spot any of these on foot in Whoville?
Reebok Instapump Fury ‘Grinch’
In 2016, one of the wildest Grinch-themed sneakers of all time was created, featuring the iconic Reebok Instapump Fury. Arriving just in time for the holiday season that year, the pairs featured furry panels that popped out from beneath the red bladders. Equal parts Grinch- and Christmas-inspired, there’s no doubt these would have turned every head at the family gathering.
Nike Kobe 6 Protro ‘Grinch’
Initially debuting on Christmas Day in 2010, the legendary Nike Kobe 6 ‘Grinch’ is one of the most recognisable designs from the late Kobe Bryant’s vast sneaker catalogue. Taking inspiration from Dr. Seuss’ notorious Christmas trouble-maker, most directly through the colourway, the Kobe 6 ‘Grinch’ pays homage to one of the most venomous snakes in East Africa: the green mamba. The pairs saw a return in late 2020.
adidas Forum Low ‘Grinch’
The ‘Grinch’ may have been keeping quiet in recent years, but he ventured out of his mountain cave to try and steal Christmas again in 2022. The fictional antagonist is brought to life on the adidas Forum via several details, including the shaggy green suede uppers, the red accents on the strap hardware and outsole pods, plus a very on-the-nose nod, with the Grinch’s actual face plastered on the tongue tabs. Rounding it all out is the specialised shoe box and keychain.
Cactus Plant Flea Market x Nike Dunk Low ‘Grinch’ aka ‘Overgrown’
In recent years, enigmatic streetwear label Cactus Plant Flea Market have been going to town on the Nike Dunk Low, whipping up iterations that many wouldn’t have imagined in their wildest sneaker dreams (or nighmares!). Among them is the ‘Grinch’, also known as the ‘Overgrown’. While initially, and predominantly still, thought of as a Dr. Seuss-inspired release, the reveal of swing tags suggested the inspiration wasn’t the furry character but something else entirely. Reading, ‘I’ve been growing! Please trim excess material on Nike CPFM Flea 1 before wear,’ the collaboration definitely requires some DIY action.,
Odell Beckham Jr.’s Custom Nike Cleats
Odell Beckham Jr. got into the festive spirit in a big way in 2019 with a pair of pregame cleats from Nike. OBJ debuted his customised Vapor Untouchable Pro 3 OBJ Uptempo Cleats during pregame time in December of that year. The uppers were covered in shaggy green faux fur, with touches of yellow that represent the Grinch’s eyes. Across the pairs, other Grinch-related motifs could be seen, including the Air More Uptempo-inspired, candy cane-esque OBJ lettering and a mini embroidered love heart.
Ceeze x Nike SB Dunk High ‘Grinch’ Custom
Custom sneaker creator Ceeze cooked up a Nike SB Dunk High ‘Grinch’ custom alongside @johnnyskicks_ in 2020. The sneaker pays homage to the classic Dr. Seuss character, drenched in vibrant lime tones (reminiscent of the Nike Kobe 6 Protro ‘Grinch’) and constructed with a bunch of wild materials that add lots of texture. Hits of red also appeared on the shoes, as well as the ornamental tongues, which brought the seasonal vibe. Just ten pairs of these custom joints were ever made.
Nike Blue Ribbon SB ‘Grinch’
In April this year, Nike’s skateboarding sub-line unveiled the skate-ready Blue Ribbon SB, aka BRSB. Simplistic colourways have been synonymous with the Cortez-inspired BRSB until this Grinch-inspired pair popped up. The colours strike the perfect Christmas vibe with tonal green hues, red Swooshes and white midsoles. Texture can be seen across the uppers through the mix of suede, synthetic fabric and leather.
