The AMBUSH and Nike love affair first began in 2018, with initial teasers suggesting the brands would work on the Nike Air Max 180 to create something that was one part classic Air Max and one part futuristic boot. Kicking off AMBUSH’s sneaker collaborations game with an affair to remember, Ahn’s take on the Air Max 180 gave the model a high-top makeover and a zippered shroud to boot – all executed in ripstop nylon. The drop featured both a white pair and a black.

The Air Max 180 is one of Ahn’s all-time favourite pairs, with the designer saying, ‘The Air Max 180 is the first pair of sneakers I ever bought with my own money. I wanted it so badly, having seen it in the pages of a magazine.’

A few years back, AMBUSH were regular collaborators with Converse, and the first AMBUSH x Converse creps to arrive were the Chuck 70 and the Pro Leather. The black Pro Leather iteration took cues from the old rubber Extreme Cold Weather Boot that Converse produced for the military way back in the 1950s, while the Chuck 70 was clad in coconut white with a platform sole unit. Of course, both are reimagined in rubber with details like gusseted tongues, insulated interiors, and tonal rope lacing.

Not long after, AMBUSH hooked up with Converse again, this time for a furry pair of Chuck 70s. Mostly covered in a hairy blue material, cream hits on the toe and laces added an extra splash of contrast. And for their final magic trick, both brands came together to create a duo of Converse Rubber Boots rendered in monochromatic black and baby blue.

When rumours surfaced that AMBUSH would be teaming up with Nike for a collaborative Dunk, the news spread like wildfire. Then, those rumours became a reality with the release of the iconic hot pink AMBUSH x Nike Dunk Highs. A sneak peek arrived in early 2020, but they didn’t see a real drop until the following year. Fuelled by Japanese automotive culture, the re-imagined Dunk extends the Swoosh beyond the heel, capturing the aesthetic of an exhaust pipe.

Speaking about the release, Ahn told Nike, ‘I thought, how can I make the shoes almost look like this moving thing?’ She added, ‘I thought of all these amazing and strong female characters from the 90s who would come out in men’s clothes, and I wanted to see how we could carry that attitude but bring in more feminine forms.’

With the AMBUSH x Nike Dunk High ‘Lethal Pink’ a wild success, it came as no surprise that Ahn would have more Dunks on the way. Not long after the release of the ‘Lethal Pink’, leaked looks at more AMBUSH-designed Dunks arrived, this time in familiar colourways like the ‘Chicago’ and ‘Deep Royal’. As it turns out, the ‘Chicago’ pairs were a Yoon exclusive, meaning they never actually saw a release. On the flip side, the ‘Deep Royal’ pairs released mid-2021, dressed in a ‘Deep Royal Blue’, white, ‘Pale Ivory’ and black scheme. The upper uses white as a base for the leather, while the colour hits via the royal blue overlays. Additionally, the bold, black Swooshes extend beyond the heel, giving the Dunk a distinctive – and divisive – look.

Following the release of the ‘Deep Royal’ came the ‘Flash Lime’. Reverting to a monochromatic colour scheme reminiscent of the ‘Lethal Pink’, this time Ahn went for something much more citrusy! Official images of the pairs eventually confirmed their rumoured existence, along with a reveal from Ahn on SNKRS Live. At that point, many were still hoping for the ‘Chicago’ pairs, but this big hit of zest was enough to garner all the attention!

Putting the Nike Dunk Highs on ice for a minute, Ahn took the archival Nike Air Adjust Force out for a test run! First teased back in November 2021, it appeared AMBUSH would retro the model in two colourways: the Black/Psychic Purple and Summit White/Black. True to form, Ahn reinvented the classic 1996 silhouette with AMBUSH vibes. These subtle adjustments were reflected in the slightly lowered cut and the addition of Nike Grind into the midsoles alongside custom heel branding. The FitWrap straps add a customisable element to top things off.

In 2022, AMBUSH continued their hot streak with the Nike Air Adjust Force in two more vibrant colourways. First surfacing in August, it wasn’t long until the ‘University Blue’ and ‘Light Madder Root’ pairs saw a global release in October. Like the initial drop, one pair was slightly more tonal, while the other features a black midsole. Ahn also announced that AMBUSH would be throwing a street rave in Milan to coincide with fashion week, creating even more hype for the collaboration.
