One word: rollercoaster. It's probably the only word that can truly sum up what a year it's been. Sneaker culture on a whole – well, it's a vastly different landscape to what it was 10 years ago, but so is everything, even this very magazine. For over a decade now, the WDYWT thread has been a staple destination in my virtual travels – a place where people from all races and spaces could form like Voltron and nerd out on the one thing that truly binds us, sneakers. It was this very forum thread that led a young determined brat, AKA me, down a slippery slope filled with shoe boxes from all over the globe. It was my childhood, my sanctuary, my education, and my weakness all in the one retina-popping package. And that was back then.
Jump a decade into the future and who would have thought that this eager kid who probably should have spent more time chasing girls or at least going Hans Solo on Darth Vader's head, would eventually come to work for the very institution that shaped his passions for shoes, music and fashion like no other could. I have been lucky enough to be a part of this spectacular community and be in a position to give back to the community that shaped and led me to the place I am today. This WDYWT Recap goes out to every single person that has ever taken the time to check out our community, this one goes out to those that have been leading by example since day one, but most of all, this one goes out to every single sneakerhead in the world – without all of you, this amazing community that changed my life for the better would simply cease to exist.
It's been a crazy, wild, fscked-up, tiring, brain-busting time over the last three years, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
This is Mike, signing out for good, fam!
