VERSUS: Should 90s Skate Stay Dead and Buried?

Date: November 02 2018

Big pants, tiny wheels, and gargantuan builds, the 1990s skate scene went coast to coast thanks to a booming sneaker scene, with brands like Vans, Airwalk and Duffs all cashing in on the kick kick push phenomenon.

With A$AP Rocky recently dropping the Under Armour SRlo, the ES Scheme set for a revival, and brands like DC ready to bust open the market, is it time to embrace the throwback and ride on into the 21st century? Or should we leave 90s skate back in the digestive tract of the Y2K bug?

We sent two of our writers to duke it out in a place they won’t get grazed knees: the internet.

Gabe Font

I'm sorry, but not even your boy A$AP Rocky and his whack skate-rave Under Armours are going to make this right. 1990s skate sneakers are finished, why bring them back?

Matt Font

Why bring back any retro shoe once it’s passed its prime? Weren’t you rocking Air Max 90s only yesterday?

Gabe Font

The Air Max 90 doesn't come with disturbing style connotations ... I mean, honestly, are you going to rock up in giant pants and tiny little skate wheels to rock the look? You the real MVP of Halloween bro. Seriously, show up in the Osiris D3 next week and I'm out.

Matt Font

Would if I could, the D3 is flames!

Gabe Font

Really?

Matt Font

OG D3s are like hen’s teeth now. I’m glad A$AP teamed up with the original designer to bring that shit back to life.

Gabe Font

Seriously? Who's going to be wearing these shoes? Us? Awkward dudes in our early 30s desperate to rediscover the lost reveries of our youth?

Matt Font

Isn’t that what adulthood is all about though? Earning enough cash to buy up all the things you wanted as a kid?

Gabe Font

There ain't no way momma was gunna allow these back in the 90s, and she sure as shit ain't gunna give me a pass on them now.

Matt Font

Still letting your momma dress you are you buddy?

Gabe Font

Everything is romanticised in hindsight. This kind of stuff was not built for the cold, hostile light of 2018; life's too cynical now. These were built for a time and place: a perfect storm of early tech and video games, vert ramps, and God-awful kicks.

Matt Font

Nobody’s ever going to argue that 90s skate kicks were the height of fashion, but they represent one of the greatest times in sneaker culture. Man, did you never watch the 1999 X-Games when Tony Hawk pulled off the 900°? That is still one of the greatest moments of my childhood!

Gabe Font

Yeah, but there's a certain time and place for it. It's as bad as wearing an ‘I <3 My Little Pony’ shirt to a funeral; you're going to raise the dead with that shit.

Matt Font

90s skate is going to be the height of fashion next year — mark my words! It’s the next logical evolution after chunky trainers. Jonah Hill is pushing for a comeback and that man is fashionable AF.

Gabe Font

The Jawnz Gospel according to Jonah? Just because the man uttered it don't make it right. The boy rocking around in Prada ffs. Nothing says mid-90s like high-fashion low top luxury leather trainers!

Matt Font

Dude, adidas just signed him to some multi-million dollar endorsement deal behind the scenes. He's gonna be the next Nic Galway!

Gabe Font

So what does your ideal world look like? The rampant and unrestrained appropriation of 90s skate looks? GG bro, you're going to snap your ankles clean off. Day 1 of your revival. I guarantee it. Are you going to sew a little dope pocket in your tongue too?

Matt Font

Man, if they resurrect Muska’s Circa pro model, I won’t even have to worry about sewing!

Gabe Font

Matt Font

It was a different time man, a different feel. If I ever copped a Tesla, you can guarantee it’ll be sitting pretty next to one mighty fine manual. We need to appreciate the past to realise how far we’ve come.

Gabe Font

Appreciate don't mean appropriate. Leave it as a beautiful memory. You don't want to sleep with an ex.

Matt Font

Don't you?

Gabe Font
