The Japanese label’s founder initially put up a post in support of the recent Hong Kong protests against a controversial extradition bill which has been the centre of a heated citizens’ rights debate. The post was later deleted.
Takahashi’s post featured a photo of protestors with the caption, ‘no extradition to China’. Following social media backlash, Undercover responded by stating that the post was an ‘individual opinion’ shared by mistake.
Chinese retailer YYSports has reveal that Nike sent them an ‘urgent notice’ following the Instagram post, resulting in the cancellation of the Daybreak release originally scheduled for June 14. Other retailers even went a step further, with online-based Douniu removing all Undercover products from its inventory due to ‘special reasons’.
Nike is yet to give an official response since the cancellation.
