ICYMI: The Sneaker Week in Review – April 24
A lot can happen in the sneaker game in seven days, so much so that you could be forgiven for not being across the board on all of the news. And so we give you ICYMI, a curated recount of the need-to-know stories to keep you up to date. New releases, colourways and industry chatter – it’s all here… in case you missed it!
OFF-WHITE X AIR JORDAN 1 COLLABORATION SURFACES
A few shoddily cropped and washed out images of an alleged Off-White x Air Jordan 1 colab had been doing the rounds for a while, but last week we finally got a decent look at the highly anticipated collaboration. These new pictures, that come from WeChat, show tooling and styling similar to what we’ve seen from Off-White in the past. The text branding has ‘AIR’ sitting under the heel on the midsole, with a description of the shoe printed across the medial side replacing the missing Swoosh. The stitching has been accentuated just as Virgil Abloh did with the Air Force 1, but this Jay has been tinkered with even further – overlays have been pulled back, folded over and even doubled up in various places as a nod to the design process.
As these are leaked images, nothing about the release of this Off-White x Air Jordan 1 is official. Stay tuned and we’ll update you as soon as more info comes in.
THE AIR VAPORMAX HITS NIKEID
The Air VaporMax made a cameo on NIKEiD back in March for Air Max Day, and now Nike have added it to the platform permanently. Seven different coloured soles will be available: turquoise, volt, orange, black, pink, blue and a clear version. Perhaps most exciting, is that the uppers for all of these are built from black Flyknit, meaning that you’ll be able to make a ‘Triple Black’ VaporMax like the NikeLAB release. Or, if you want to spice things up, choosing the black sole also gives you the option to choose any of the seven colours for the Swoosh.
The Nike Air VaporMax is available for customisation on NIKEiD right now.
ADIDAS YEEZY BOOST 350 V2 ‘TRIPLE WHITE’ OFFICIAL RELEASE INFO ANNOUNCED
Buckle your belts, hold onto your wallets and get your kids hyped because the next Yeezy BOOST 350 V2 has been confirmed for an April 29 release – and it’s coming in both adults and children’s sizes. This ‘Triple White’ colourway is a refreshing tonal update, distinctly minimal in comparison to its ‘Zebra’ predecessor. Reflecting the partnership of adidas and Kanye West, the Yeezy BOOST range continues to combine comfort and performance with modern vision and high-end style.
The adidas Yeezy BOOST 350 V2 in ‘Triple White’ will drop on April 29. You’ll be able to cop your pair from select adidas Originals stockists, including Solebox.
RONNIE FIEG DROPS ASICS VOLCANO 2.0 COLAB COLLECTION
After a number of teases, Ronnie Fieg dropped his latest ASICS colab last week, including the revival of the GEL-Diablo silhouette, as well as another run on the popular ‘Volcano’ colourway. Released on April 21, the ‘Volcano 2.0’ collection contains both a demonic retro debut for the Diablo and a piping hot GEL-Lyte III.
The Diablo features a white upper, flowing lines and a few hits of colour, while the GEL-Lyte III gets a little more carried away with the colours with deep reds and oranges mixed up in an eruption of style. Both of the collaborative models have been made in Japan using the best materials available.
UNDEFEATED X REEBOK INSTAPUMP FURY PACK
No question about it, Allen Iverson fans were pumped when this colab was revealed. Joining forces with Reebok, Undefeated have tackled the InstaPump Fury – covering two versions of the hoofed runner in colourways made famous by Iverson’s Question Mid. Both the ‘Blue Toe’ and ‘Red Toe’ Philadelphia 76ers compositions are interpreted with largely white leather uppers being met with splashes of colour on the toe boxes.
The Undefeated x Reebok InstaPump Fury Pack is available now from Undefeated.
NIKELAB TACKLE THE AIR MAX PLUS
NikeLAB have turned their attentions to the king of the concrete jungle, the Air Max Plus. Affectionately known as the TN for its Tuned Air technology, and revered in certain enclaves for upper tooling packed with machismo, the Air Max Plus has been blessed with four new make-ups. Black, light lavender, soft pink and beige can be found accenting the respective sneakers. There’s no characteristic fade across the mesh, but their dominant colours do suffuse along the supports. As a NikeLAB offering, the builds on these are a little more luxe than usual. Instead of a plastic toe cap and glossy mudguard, these TNs receive a supple tumbled leather that trails above the midsole.
The NikeLAB Air Max Plus pack will be available on April 25 from NikeLAB.
KITH X ADIDAS ACE 16+ ULTRABOOST LEAKS
Ronnie Fieg and Kith have certainly been busy. Following the release of the GEL-Diablo and GEL-Lyte IIIs under Fieg’s name last week, it’s now been revealed that the retailer also has another colab in the pipeline. Leakers on Twitter disclosed that the next Kith drop would be an adidas Ace 16 + UltraBOOST, and just like the Diablo, it’s going to be super limited with less than 500 pairs slated to be up for grabs.
As is increasingly the case with hyped drops like this, the sneakers have been leaked before adidas have distributed official information – meaning nothing about this release is confirmed. However, if the information is correct, the Kith x adidas Ace 16 + UltraBOOST will be available on May 19.
THE OG SOCK RACER JOINS NIKEID
Nike’s Sock Racer has been an oddball since day one. 31 years later, the marathon shoe still sits in a league of its own, with its laceless upper and minimal construction. Nike recently revealed their Flyknit update, with a revised upper and new Ultra sole unit, and now NIKEiD have announced that the OG construction will be available for order in a staggering 90 colour options. This is the first time the Sock Raced has been available on the customisable Swoosh platform, so we’re sure it’ll receive a great reception.
The Nike Sock Racer OG will be available on NIKEiD from May 4.
ADIDAS ULTRABOOST MID ATR EMERGES
New images have surfaced on Instagram revealing a never-seen UltraBOOST midtop silhouette. The new style sees the collar of the runner raised to ankle-hugging heights, and Three Stripes branding and Primeknit upper design is updated to suit. Though adidas are tight-lipped about this UltraBOOST Mid version, it’s a look that’s been leaked before in grey – and, with this ‘Burgundy’ drop bolstering hopes, its release will be hotly anticipated.
There is no official release date for the adidas UltraBOOST Mid ATR in Burgundy, but we’ll fill you in with updates as they come.
THE NIKE AIR MAX MORE JOINS THE SWOOSH ARSENAL
Ten years after Britney Spears pleaded for it, Nike are finally giving us More. Or, to be exact, the Air Max More. The new offering utilises the AM2017‘s big bubble, but employs Hyperfuse tech to pare back the upper into a streamlined silhouette. As Nike releases are wont to do lately, the shoe shouts out it’s titular tech with ‘AIR’ plastered proudly across the medial side. Pioneering the look is this ‘Black/White’ number, with an abundance of black complementing its sleek build and flashes of white for contrast, it looks like Nike have another hit on their hands. Thanks Brit!
The Nike Air Max More is available now from Swoosh stockists worldwide, including Titolo.
NEW BALANCES DEBUTS THE 247 BREATHE PACK
New Balance presents the next step in their urban odyssey – the 247 Breathe Pack. Perfect for the warmer weather, the new model has a fresh feel and an updated look for effortless daily style.
Combining elements of street style and performance footwear, the pack continues along the athletic-inspired trail blazed by the 247 Sport, doing so with the quality and style we’ve come to expect from the 247 line. The six monochromatic colourways have been built from airy mesh, filled with a form-fitting neoprene sock and laid down upon a supportive REVlite sole. As the summer sun starts heating up the Northern Hemisphere, the new 247 Breathe is the perfect option for anyone with an on-the-go lifestyle that requires the most comfortable shoe around – while still maintaining that cutting edge 247 style.
The New Balance 247 Breathe pack will be available from May 1 at select stockists around the globe.
PARLEY FOR THE OCEANS X ADIDAS ULTRABOOST UNCAGED
The ongoing Parley for the Oceans x adidas collaboration revisits the UltraBOOST Uncaged for another environmentally-conscious offering to Three Stripe fans. The upper is reminiscent of the water’s surface and its deep blue waves and has been made using 95 percent recycled ocean plastic and the rest is recycled polyester. The ubiquitous adidas BOOST sole has been fastened underfoot to keep your feet firmly planted on land or at sea.
The Parley for the Oceans x adidas UltraBOOST Uncaged will be available from May 10 at select adidas stockists.
