ICYMI: The Sneaker Week in Review – May 1
A lot can happen in the sneaker game in seven days, so much so that you could be forgiven for not being across the board on all of the news. And so we give you ICYMI, a curated recount of the need-to-know stories to keep you up to date. New releases, colourways and industry chatter – it’s all here… in case you missed it!
‘BLACK CEMENT’ AIR JORDAN 3 RUMOURED TO RETURN IN 2018
Word has started to spread that the immortal ‘Black Cement‘ Air Jordan 3 will return in 2018 in all its Elephant print glory. To sweeten things that little bit more, rumour has it that the upcoming version will finally see the return of Nike Air branding – which would be the first time the Swoosh has adorned the iconic make-up since 2001. Speculation is that the retro return will coincide with 2018’s NBA All-Star Weekend in mid-February.
We can only hope at this stage that the rumours the ‘Black Cement’ Air Jordan 3 is returning are true, but you can count on us to keep you updated as soon as further news is announced.
SUPREME X NIKE AIR MORE UPTEMPO DROPS
It was a long time coming, but the Supreme x Nike Air More Uptempo colab finally hit the streets over the weekend. Scottie Pippen’s signature spell-out sneaker was altered with the New York brand’s name, which is plastered across the panels in place of the silhouette’s iconic ‘AIR’. Available in ‘Red/White’, black and metallic gold colourways, each features embroidered Swoosh logos and reflective detailing.
All three colourways of the Supreme x Nike Air More Uptempo sold out instantly upon their release through NikeLAB, so your only option to cop now is unfortunately by forking out a pretty penny on the resale market!
ADIDAS YEEZY BOOST 650 V1 LEAKS
While dozens of fakes and questionable customs filter through sneaker channels every day, it’s rare that a Yeezy prototype makes its way out of adidas’ grasp after being shelved in the design process – but that appears to be the case here.
The shoes appeared, as usual, on a sneaker leaker’s Instagram and have been labelled the Yeezy BOOST 650 v1. Characterised by a raised collar, the new model looks to be a natural graduation of the 350 v2. The tooling is the same, and the v2’s midsole seems to be reused, although a portion of the heel comes in a darker tint. Before you get your hopes up about a new Yeezy, it should be noted that Yeezy aficionados have already claimed the shoe to be a discontinued idea that won’t be hitting retailers.
AIR JORDAN DEFINING MOMENTS PACK ANNOUNCED
The Jumpman is taking it all the way back to 1998 with a duo of Jays that celebrate Michael Jordan’s last finals series. Lacing up in the AJ13 for the majority of the series, MJ then switch to the AJ14 for the last one-and-a-half games, reclaimed the lead from the Utah Jazz and earning his sixth ring with the famed ‘Last Shot’ play. Coming in white and black respectively, the Jordans in the pack recognise the championship achievement with gold adornments and special branding. Both shoes have ‘Until we quit’ on one tongue and ‘They can’t win’ on the other.
The Air Jordan Defining Moments pack doesn’t have a set release date, but word on the grapevine is that we can expect them in stores around June.
NIKE DEBUT 'SAFARI'-INSPIRED PRESTO AND SOCK DART PACKS
Air icons unite in a heavy-speckled Swoosh mash-up. The Air Presto gets infused with the Air Safari‘s distinctive spotty print in four eye-catching colourways. Available in ‘Turbo Green’, ‘Gym Red’, ‘University Gold’ and ‘White/Black’, each feature TPU components adorned with the dotty print. However, it turns out the Air Presto isn’t the only Swoosh silhouette going on ‘Safari’. Its equally comfortable sibling, the Sock Dart, has received a dotty makeover of its own. In contrast to the Safari-blessed Presto, these sock-fit sneakers sport the spotted print all over their stretch uppers, leaving the signature strap icy clear. The Sock Dart arrives in ‘Turbo Green’, ‘University Gold’ and ‘White/Black’ colourways.
Both the Nike Air Presto and Sock Dart ‘Safari’ packs are available now through NDC and selected Nike Sportswear stockists.
ADIDAS REVEAL FULL PARLEY COLLECTION
We recently had a sneak peek at a fresh new Parley for the Oceans x adidas UltraBOOST Uncaged but now it would appear that we were merely skimming the surface. The Stripes have unveiled the collaborative collection in all its glory, sporting a full trio of BOOST favourites – the aforementioned Uncaged version, an Ultra BOOST 3.0 and a women’s UltraBOOST X. In keeping with the partnership’s environmental focus, each pair has been created using an average of 11 recycled plastic bottles, with the PET material going into the laces, heel webbing, lining and innersole.
The Parley for the Oceans x adidas BOOST collection will be available from May 10 in store and online via adidas.
AIR JORDAN 1 HIGH OG 'METALLIC RED' CONFIRMED FOR MAY RELEASE
It is always important to keep your wits about you when a release date leaks. After all, you’re typically placing blind faith in the hearsay of baseless whispers. In this case, however, the rumours have proven to be 100 percent true! The Air Jordan 1 High ‘Metallic Red’ will be making its long overdue return this May. It mightn’t attract the same hype factor as ‘Breds‘ and ‘Royals‘, but as one of the last AJ1 colourways from the original line-up to be retroed in true OG form, this release is a must-cop for all true Jordan heads.
ADIDAS REVEAL LONDON EXCLUSIVE INIKI RUNNER
The Iniki Runner has quickly established itself as one of the most desirable sneakers in the current Three Stripes line-up, and this black and red make-up is set to be the most sought after yet. Releasing exclusively in London, solely at the adidas Originals store in Foubert’s Place, this marks the first limited edition release for the heritage-inspired silhouette. While the exclusivity is all but guaranteed to make this release a sell-out, the colourway in itself makes for one of the nicest Inikis we’ve seen. A black suede and textile upper is hit with striking red leather overlays, while an always-glorious gum outsole hugs the signature crisp white BOOST. In a deviation from the norm, the ‘INIKI’ branding is printed in silver, as opposed to the standard gold.
The adidas Iniki Runner ‘London Exclusive’ will go on sale May 4, exclusively through the adidas Originals store at Foubert’s Place in London.
REEBOK DEBUT ALIEN STOMPER FINAL BATTLE PACK
Following the monumentally successful release of the film-correct Alien Stompers in 2016, Reebok have announced the sequel – this pair of highly collectible Stompers in mid-cut formation. Extracting design inspirations from the climax between Ripley and the Xenomorph Queen, the ‘Final Battle’ pack is a nostalgic celebration of one of the most intense blockbuster finales in cinematic history. The ‘Queen’ Alien Stomper was inspired by the gloss finish of the Xenomorph exoskeleton, while the other draws inspiration from Ripley’s battle-ready ‘Powerloader’ cargo suit.
The Reebok Alien Stomper Final Battle pack will be available on July 18 from select Reebok accounts.
NIKE ‘PASTEL SATIN’ PACK REVEALED
Nike have graced two silhouettes with a silky satin finish, making up this ‘Pastel Satin’ pack. The Air Max 95 has been hit with ‘Fiberglass’ and ‘Liquid Lime’, and the Nike Internationalist comes in soft shades of ‘Lavender’ and ‘Light Blue’ – each tonally covering the sneakers’ uppers. The lighter shades give a distinctively feminine touch to the pack, easing the aggressive AM95 silhouette for a charming look. Like Nike’s Air Max Plus ‘Summer Satin’ pack, these editions feature ‘Sail’ midsoles and classic gum outsoles for an exceptionally classy finish.
The Nike ‘Pastel Satin’ pack is set for a May 12 drop and will be available from select retailers, including SNKRS.
ADIDAS REVEAL NEW 'MULTICOLOUR' BOOST SNEAKERS
It’s been a few months since we saw these ‘Rainbow’ UltraBOOST 3.0s. They first appeared as a leak, with a solitary image showing the flurry of colour that was spread over its knit upper. However, the sneaker has now appeared via official adidas imagery – hinting that a release could be just around the corner. The UltraBOOST isn’t the only Three Stripes model chasing the rainbow, however. Its sleek sibling, the brand new Pure BOOST DPR, has received a multicolour makeover of its very own. It’ll be a tough pick to choose between this and the ‘Rainbow‘ UltraBOOST – so why not buy both?
The adidas Pure BOOST DPR in ‘Multicolour’ will be available from May 31 through adidas online. The ‘Rainbow’ adidas UltraBOOST doesn’t have a release date, but one can’t be far off.
NIKE CONVERT THE AIR MAX 90 INTO A SLIP-ON
If you hear anyone bemoaning sneaker releases for being repetitive, you just need to direct them to this pair. In their ongoing quest to strip sneakers of weight, Nike have gotten freaky with Air Max 90 – creating this Ultra 2.0 EZ version. Not much info about these oddities is available but we assume that ‘EZ’ refers to the shoe being quick to slip off. They might not be everyone’s cup of tea, true, but for any early adopters looking for a low-cut Chelsea boot/sneaker hybrid – your search is over.
The women’s Nike Air Max 90 Ultra 2.0 Ease is set to release on May the 3 through NDC and select Nike Sportswear stockists.
STAMPD AND PUMA COLLABORATE ON '96 HOURS' COLLECTION
Stampd and PUMA’s ’96 Hours’ collection has dropped, bringing with it a range of slick new sneakers. The collection takes its inspiration from the laid-back Californian lifestyle, and the urban and coastal nomads who live it. Featured in the collection are the Clydeand Trinomic Woven models in tonal grey, light grey and black variations. The perforated uppers of the sneakers are intended to provide a lightweight vehicle for travelling feet and the minimal shades were inspired by wetsuits and seaside vistas. Aiming to be durable, versatile and stylish, this collection is the perfect addition to any summer wardrobe.
The Stampd x PUMA ’96 Hours’ collection is available online now from Stampd.
NEXT NIKE SB 'ORANGE BOX' DUNK TRIBUTE LEAKS
In the midst of Nike SB‘s 15th anniversary, the Swoosh‘s skate division has wound back the clock to revisit the original ‘Orange Box’ line-up – with a twist. Having already tackled some of the later releases from SB’s inaugural year, an Instagram leak has revealed that the team have now set their sights on one of the first four SBs to hit shelves – the original ‘Wheat Forbes’ Dunk Low, designed by Nike SB team rider Reese Forbes. Like the ‘Reverse Shark‘ Dunk before it, SB have have subjected the original design to inverse colour-blocking. The design’s darker hues have switched places with its lighter tones, producing a Dunk that is both familiar and unique.
The Nike SB Dunk Low ‘Reverse Wheat Forbes’ is rumoured to be hitting selected SB stockists on May 25.
TAKA HAYASHI DEBUTS NEW VANS COLLECTION
Design guru Taka Hayashi has teamed up with Vans for a 17th collaborative collection – that’s one productive partnership! The veteran of Vans colabs has taken his hand to the Sk8-Nomad LX, built up in suede and nubuck, and the low-cut Mountain Edition Lace Ox LX. The colourways remain relatively simple, with the exception of the lively checkerboard version, with a refined style and quality construction. With this many notches on their collaborative belt, you know they’re onto a good thing.
The 17th Taka Hayashi x Vans collection is available now from select Vans stockists.
DEAL UNVEIL 'TAI CHI' REEBOK INSTAPUMP FURY COLAB
Whether you’re talking stability or aesthetics, a sneaker is nothing without balance. Chinese sneaker store Deal know this and have embraced philosophies drawn from tai chi to make sure their new Reebok InstaPump Fury collaboration is rock solid in both respects. Slashed with a binary of white and black, these Furys have a yin yang motif on their heels and a measured speckle under the heel. The Pump buttons are then coloured in contrasting shades to symbolise opposite forces working in unity.
The Deal x Reebok InstaPump Fury ‘Tai Chi’ hasn’t been given a release date just yet. Stay with us and we’ll hit you with updates as they come.
