An official statement reads: ‘The adidas Originals by Donald Glover partnership has come to an end. Together, adidas and Glover set out to look beyond the confines of a traditional collaboration inspired by limitless creativity. adidas continues to be inspired by Glover’s visionary creativity and wishes him the best in his future endeavours.’
First announced in September 2018, Glover was another high-profile celebrity ambassador added to the Three Stripes roster alongside the likes of Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Beyonce and Pusha T who have all enjoyed varying degrees of success with their signature adidas sneakers. The Donald Glover Presents collection was unveiled in April 2019, consisting of the artist’s reimagining of three classic silhouettes from the adidas archives – the Nizza, Continental 80 and Lacombe. In a unique marketing launch, random attendees at last year’s Childish Gambino–headlining Coachella festival received AirDrop notifications with the offer of a free pair ahead of the official April 26 release date.
There’s been no official comment from the enigmatic Glover, but the adidas announcement comes in an eventful week that saw the rapper release a surprise new album only to delete it less than 24 hours later.
