The Three Stripes have stepped up a position on the podium replacing Under Armour for the second tier position. The news comes by way of NPD sports industry analyst, Matt Powell, who tweeted that adidas have reclaimed the number two spot for sales of sports and footwear in the US.

It’s not an entirely shocking development. But, given that Under Armour have roughly one fifth of the assets and much less brand heritage than the Three Stripes, a number three position is still impressive.
The ascent falls in line with adidas’ previous gains on Nike – growth that some are attributing to adidas’ new CEO, Mark King, shifting the brand’s focus to basketball, running and the Originals line. King also made it clear that adidas would continue to put numbers on the boards, saying they could ‘compete at a much higher level.'
For now, though, adidas will be enjoying the small victory – and with the NBA season just beginning, you can bet they’ll be plotting bigger things.
