UPDATE: The Limited Edt x ASICS Gel Lyte III 'Vanda' is available to purchase now over at Limited Edt's  online store. Peep the release video above for a little insight into the crazy amount of work that went into creating the shoe's intricately woven textile upper.

For 50 years Singapore has stood proudly independent. With a turbulent history of invasion, occupation and foreign settlement behind it, the island country has blossomed under its newfound sovereignty. This jubilee of freedom has brought out a prodigious sense of pride amongst the inhabitants of this flourishing Southeast Asian nation, though none more proud than Mandeep Chopra. His sneaker boutique Limited Edt has established a reputation for imaginative colabs, spreading Singaporean culture throughout the sneaker scene. We joined Mandeep in celebration to get the lowdown on Limited Edt’s latest accomplishment – a contribution to the Gel Lyte III’s 25th anniversary.

What does Singapore’s milestone of independence mean to you?
For me and all Singaporeans it has been a watershed year for our very young nation and has allowed us to take stock and see how far the country has come over the years. Despite being merely a small dot on the world map and lacking any natural resources, Singapore has grown into a thriving cosmopolitan city and one of the key global financial centers. I like to think Limited Edt and Singapore are similar in that we both punch way above our weight, so to be involved with so many collaborations is something we are very proud of. We celebrate our achievements but at the same time we can’t rest on our laurels – hard work is the only recipe for success.

The running theme for your colabs is a celebration of Singapore – both its culture and its icons. What element of your home nation does the Gel Lyte III represent?
This year we have really looked deep into Singapore’s heritage. Our Blaze of Glory colab was in honour of the Merlion, which has served as an icon for our nation. For our colab with ASICS, we drew inspiration from our national flower, the Vanda ‘Miss Joaquim’ – also known as the Singapore Orchid.

The most eye-catching feature of your Gel Lyte III creation is undoubtedly the decorative fabric that adorns the forefoot of the shoe, incorporating both the Singapore Orchid and the Limited Edt logo. How did you source such a unique textile?
I am fortunate to have two great designers on my team, Jonning Chng and Joe Cher. They custom made this artwork for the print. We wanted a jacquard fabric with a woven print so that there was some texture rather than just a printed fabric. We submitted these instructions to ASICS and they had this fabric made at their factories. They managed to turn around the first sample in about a month and it looked great, exactly how we wanted it. I have never experienced such efficiency with any other brand so far.

Limited Edt has a reputation for producing some absolutely stunning in-store packages for colabs. What can we expect for this release?
We try to do something different each time. For the ASICS Gel Lyte III colab we are not going too crazy but expect a sleek black box with a tonal Spot-UV application of the shoe design printed on the box. It will also come packaged with a tie – yes a tie! – with the very same orchid print featured on the shoe, along with a custom shoe protector spray to keep the beautiful jacquard material water proof.

What else is in the pipeline for Limited Edt?
Continuing the Singaporean theme, we are planning to end the year with a two-shoe adidas colab inspired by a famous national icon that we think will ring a bell for people from all over the world. There are also a number of other projects in the works that will see light in 2016, but you’ll just have to wait and see what we have in store. We always have something new on the go, so drop on by if you’re ever in Singapore!
